There are two albumen cdv copy portraits from a daguerreotype of Dr. Thomas Hancock, M.D., author of ‘The Principles of Peace, Exemplified in the Conduct of the Society of Friends in Ireland, During the Rebellion of the Year 1798, with Some Preliminary and Concluding Observations’ and other works about Quakers. The above book was first printed in 1825 in London. Dr. Thomas Hancock was born at Lisburn, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1783, of Quaker parentage. He was educated in England, and graduated M.D. at Edinburgh in 1809. Died at Lisburn on April 6, 1849, aged 66. Wrote several works on the Friends, and medical books. The album also has a cdv portrait of Queen Victoria, plus one of the Princess of Wales (wife of the future King Edward VII) and one of Empress Eugene of France. The album certainly dates to the Civil War, as do a large number of the photographs, but many others date from the 1870’s through the 1890’s. It is clear that part of the family emigrated from Northern Ireland, the Belfast area sometime around the Civil War and given the presence of cdv’s of the British royal family, it is likely that they were of Scot-Irish descent.
