4 Piece Gorham Sterling 1938 Greenbrier. Includes a Dinner Knife, A large Serving Spoon, a Master Butter and round bowl cream soup spoon.Weight 215 grams. PROVENANCE: A Charleston South Carolina Private Estate. The Gorham Manufacturing Company was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman together with Henry L. Webster at Providence, Rhode Island. In 1863, the firm was chartered by the Rhode Island Legislature as the Gorham Manufacturing Company. They later abandoned the coin silver standard (900/1000) and adopted the sterling standard of 925/1000 in the year 1868. During the heyday of American Silver manufacturing , circa 1850 to 1940, Gorham had a strong piece of the market. The White House used Gorham Silver Services for many of the administrations. Mrs Ulysses S Grant commissioned Gorham to make a Spectacular Sterling piece to commemorate the 100th Anniversary in 1957 and they produced a Century Vase that had over 2100 ounces of silver. Mary Todd Lincoln purchased an exquisite tea and flatware service for the White House in 1859
