A finely carved cinnabar box with five jade archery rings. The exterior of the cinnabar box is elaborately carved in relief of floral motifs. The interior cushion is covered with pale-yellow silk cushion holding five various and different iridescent color jade and hard stones archery rings. Five archery rings each having different ring size. having inner lid of carved zitan wood, showing calligraphy title poems carved on the top surface, in gilt.

LOT NOTES

Cinnabar wood is very delicate as it takes over 200 thin layers of Rhus Verniciflua sap painted on it in order to carve onto its surface. This lacquering technique dates back more than 3,000 years. The color is often added with resin.
