Description
A rare and fine automation singing bird jardiniere by Blaise Bontems, c.1880. Stamped Bontems, Paris on brass plate at base of perch, entwined with silk leaves and flowers, the bird with iridescent blue, brown and gray plumage, articulated head, beak and tail controlled by going-barrel movement with bellows and whistle for birdsong. Mounted in a Sevres - type porcelain jardinière with lower gilt rim and shell formed feet. Decorated with a painted scene of a boy teaching a girl to play a musical instrument within a lake landscape setting. Overall height 20.25". The jardiniere measures 7.75" high, 9" diameter. The bird measures 4.5" long from beak to end of tail, 1.75" wide, 2.75" high. In fine working order.
NOTE: Blaise Bontems was a noted Parisian specialist in the manufacture of automaton singing birds and the first of a dynasty of automaton manufacturers, which included his son Charles Jules and his grandson Lucien. Bontems' birds were famous for the realism of their song.
