Description
A cast iron architectural Charity Container - of very large proportions and very heavy, The rectangular box divided into three compartments: Yom Kippur, Chevrah Kadisha, and Gemilath Chessed. Hebrew text on top of the compartments: 'To give anonymously averts wrath'. The center of the canopied arch, fitted with an outstretched hand giving alms; atop the arch: two lions holding a crowned crest with Yiddish text: 'Die Stetishe Schul' (Indicating the box belonged to the town's synagogue), and the word 'Shalom' below (this word plus shin indicate the year 1916). This triple charity box was built into the Synagogue's wall, the several other precedents exist for this type of 'built in' boxes. We can no emphasize enough, the importance of this charity box.
