Description
Rare New York City Stoneware Oyster Jar, New York City or New York State origin, circa 1830's, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder and tall, narrow collar, impressed with the advertising "THOMAS M. JACKSON / 47 HOWARD ST / NEW YORK". Surface covered in a matte Albany slip glaze. Thomas M. Jackson was a free African-American businessman who operated an oyster house and restaurant out of the address impressed into the jar, circa 1830's. A wonderful artifact of African-American entrepeneurship of the time period. A rim chip and light wear to rim. A small in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder. H 7 1/4".
