Description
Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-on-Branch Decoration, Stamped "T. HARRINGTON / LYONS", New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched on leafy branch. Good detail to interior of bird including dashes to body, stripes to wing, and a heavy block of cobalt to cheek. Slip-trailed "2" above. Slip-trailed highlights to maker's mark. Bird designs by Harrington are considered difficult-to-find. A very faint, approximately 3" hairline from rim to the left of the left handle. Spots of staining. Some fry to heavier-applied areas of cobalt. Two small, adjacent reglued chips at base on reverse, measuring a total of 1". Two other very minor base chips.
