Stanley Herdman (19th century) A VIEW OF EVERTON BROW INCLUDING MARY COOPER'S TOFFEE SHOP AND PRINCE RUPERT'S TOWER, pen & ink & watercolour, mounted, framed & glazed 17 by 23cm., 7 by 9in. Encapsulating the early history of the district of Everton, Mrs Cooper's shop was how Everton FC became known as ''The Toffees''. Prince Rupert's Tower was at the heart of Everton village and was used as an overnight lockup for drunks and petty criminals. The tower was incorporated into the Everton club crest. It is still extant today. Herdman was a prolific artist in the Liverpool area.
