Petit, Jean Louis. Traite des Maladies Chirurgicales, et des Operations Qui Leur Conviennet. Paris: Didot, 1774. 3 volumes + Supplement (bound at end of third volume). 8vo. All volumes with half-titles. With portrait and 90 folding plates illustrating surgical instruments. Bound in contemporary French calf with spine gilt in compartments, light cracking to two hinges, some corners showing, general wear with light loss in places. Contents generally clean though with damp and worm damage to upper corner of first few leaves of third volume and some damp-stains to upper margin throughout the volumes thought mostly quite faded, small hole to upper corner of first title, one leaf with 4" closed tear, two signatures detached, a few plates with frayed margins, otherwise contents generally clean. An attractive set. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> First edition of this work which was published after the author's death in 1750. Included in the work is the first successful operation for mastoiditis as well as a wider description of French surgical practice during the period. Each volume with plates bound in rear (31, 47, 12) totaling 90 plates depicting surgical instruments.
