Description
Gerrit Alburtus Beneker (American, Massachusetts, 1882-1934) oil on canvas done in 1928 and entitled "A Gray Day in Provincetown." Pictured is a two masted fishing vessel moored to a wharf. Signed "Gerrit A. Beneker '28" lower right and signed, dated (Sept 18, 1928) and titled on the back of the canvas. Sight size is 19 5/8 by 15 5/8 inches and overall size with original frame is 25 1/8 by 21 1/4 inches. The canvas appears to be clean but does have a fair amount of craqueleur and the old frame has a bit of gesso loss and abrasions although it does have character. A Beneker painting of the same size done in 1925 showing the same vessel in nearly the same pose, titled "A Blue Day, Provincetown" was recently sold by Eldred's. It was in better condition and brought a near record price for the artist.
