Item Details
Description
Original Rookwood Vellum glaze lamp with beautifully detailed terns in flight and a separate, carved base with waves, the work of Shirayamadani in 1905 and 1906. Five birds soar through lightly incised clouds and the vase portion sits in the hand carved base made to look like the crashing sea. The vase portion is dated 1905 and bears shape number 1023 C, the Rookwood logo and the incised cypher of the artist. The base is dated 1906 and has the Rookwood logo and shape number 1023 C. Height of the vase and base together is 11 1/2 inches. Now for the sad news. The vase has large glaze skips at the base, some hidden by the base, three places where the glaze has popped off, also somewhat covered by the base and small chips at the rim which are covered by the cap. There is fine overall crazing and a tight, dark vertical line in mid body which is barely visible on the interior. The carved base had the top of one wave broken and that has been nicely restored. The fittings are original save for the sockets which have been replaced and the wiring is incomplete. As sometimes is said, "it displays nicely" dispite some of its factory made flaws.
