Item Details
Description
Oceania, ca. 1900 CE. A covered coconut container finely carved with five panels, four of which depict royal or sacred personages, the fifth depicting a peacock standing upon a deer-like creature. At the bottom the vessel is supported by three crouching human figures, carved in high relief. At the top, the lid is carved with a peacock whose projecting neck and head function as finial. The practice of carving coconuts into precious objects took place from the 17th to 19th centuries. Itinerant traders, sailors, and prisoners were looking for a means to pass the time and created keepsakes for their loved ones. Nails and glass shards were used to create the intricate carvings. This example boasts such a complex and intricate design and iconographic program; it must have taken weeks to lay out followed by months to actually execute! Size: 7-3/4" x 5" in diameter.
