Description
A circa 1870 - 1880, Scottish or British oil on canvas depicting a man wearing a Tam o' Shanter and tartan around his shoulders. He holds in his left hand a snuff bottle and with his right he takes it to his nose. Initialed lower left, possibly T.C., T.G., J.C. or J.G. Label on the back of canvas reads, "NORTON'S ARTIST'S REPOSITORY (FROM NEW STREET) 29 PARADISE STREET, BIRIMGHAM". Norton's store was known to have resided at this address from 1866-1920 (Ref. National Portrait Gallery http://www.npg.org.uk/research/programmes/directory-of-suppliers/n.php). Canvas: 9.125"h x 7"w, housed in a period carved and gilded wood frame measuring: 13.5"h 11.25"w x 2.5"d.
Condition
Frame with numerous chips and repairs.
