Description
RARE WILLIAM & MARY ENGLISH TREASURY DOCUMENT - Godolphin (Sidney, 1st Earl, 1645-1712), D.S. 1p. Whitehall Treasury Chambers, July 27, 1694. Order for payment "for the use and Service" of "Their Majesties Workers" for unsatisfied order in the name of Thomas Lloyd, Esq. Paymaster, in the sum of one thousand, three-hundred and eight pounds, three shillings and six pence. Godolphin was at this time High Treasurer, though still in correspondence with the exiled King James II. Also signed by Charles Montague (1661-1715), later 1st Earl of Halifax, Chancellor of the Exchequer, etc. It was this year (1694) that his bill establishing the Bank of England became law. On 8 3/4" x 9 3/4" sheet of laid paper, with vertical crease through signatures, upper left corner off.
