Description
KAWASE HASUI (Japanese 1883-1957) A WOODBLOCK PRINT, "Zaimoku Island, Matsushima," ink and color on paper, signed "Hasui" and sealed "Kawase" L/R. 15 1/4" x 10 1/4" NOTE: One from the series "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan: Eastern Japan," published May of 1933, by Watanabe Shozaburo. Hasui is considered the leading printmaker within the "shin-hanga" movement. This print is a particularly characteristic example of why his technique is so highly regarded: striking colors, eye-catching perspectives, as well as obscure and serene Japanese landscapes. A virtually identical print is currently housed in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum. Another was sold, together with a second print by Hasui, at Christie's New York, "Japanese And Korean Art," 18 September 2013, Lot 600 for $1,875.
