Description
[FRANCE] Antoine-Louis Chaumont Millire (1746-1803) French engineer in charge of the roads and bridges from 1781-1792. In 1787 , he in addition to his responsibilities on roads and bridges, had the responsibility of Quartermaster General of Mines, mining and terrestrial substances, previously entrusted to the Douet Boullaye. Louis XVI said that the Millire was the most honest man in the kingdom and offered him twice, in 1787 and in 1790, the Comptroller General of Finance after Calonne and Necker, but could not overcome his resistance. Millire died in 1803 after having escaped, not without difficulty, to the dangers of revolution. ALS dated 1786, 1p. written in the 3rd person, begins with his signature. Approx. 6 x 8 in.
