Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit,200 BCE/CE. This group of five figures sit in a circle; one has an arm around another, while one plays a flute. They all wear headdresses and have small details like loincloths, earrings, and nose rings. Their poses suggest intimacy and friendship. Although the Nayarit did not leave behind large architectural monuments, we can still imagine their society from the abundance of clay sculptures we have from them; this one, with its theme of friendship and shared music, reminds us that people in the past enjoyed many of the same things as we do today. A similar piece is held by the Art Institute of Chicago. Size: 3"H x 4-1/4" in diameter across the base (the widest part).
