Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial, ca. 19th century CE. A rare wood carved Child of Atocha (El Nino de Atocha) figure painted in polychrome, with naturalistic features (including real eyelashes) and baby-like gestures. Although paintings on canvas and tin of El Nino de Atocha are relatively common, carvings of the Child of Atocha are relatively scarce. Attached to carved wooden chair. Size: 8-1/4" x 4-1/2" (21 x 11.4 cm).
The tradition of the child may be traced back to a suburb of Madrid, where prisoners of the faith were said to have been visited and nourished by a young boy dressed as a wandering pilgrim. Because of the miraculous nature of the child's appearance, it is accepted that he was a manifestation of the Child Jesus. He is usually shown in his traditional capelet and brimmed hat, with a traveler's staff in his left hand and a basket of bread in his right. Traditionally, he is usually seated in an elaborate chair flanked by vases of roses.
Provenance: Ex-private T. Jones Collection, NYC, NY.
