In 1874, Sloan was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, and in 1875, his family moved to Philadelphia, where he spent the next thirty years. In 1908, Sloan was one of the participating artists in the landmark exhibition, The Eight (aka. The Ashcan School), at the Macbeth Gallery in New York. Although Sloan considered himself a professional artist, with his particular aptitude for drawing and print making, he continued to support himself as a commercial illustrator until 1916. PROVENANCE: Purchased by the consignor's parents as a collection circa the 1970's from another collector. Sloan was from the consignor's family's hometown.
