97. JAMES LONGSTREET (1821-1904). Confederate lieutenant general whom Lee called his "old war-horse,"commanding the 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia at Chickamauga. He was severely wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness and was with Lee at Appomattox. Endorsement on DS, 1p, 8"x6", [New Orleans], Jan 1872. State of Louisiana voucher directed to Jno. B. Howard, for the salary of "a colonel and A.D.C. at $4000 per annum" to the "Comander in Chief." Longstreet boldly endorses vertically at left margin "Appd / James Longstreet / Adjt. Gen." Signed beneath by H. C. WARMOUTH as "Gov of La." Fine. Longstreet served as adjutant general of the state militia and in 1872 became a major general in command of all militia and state police forces within New Orleans.
