The Lords Salisbury Archive: Robert Cecil, William Cecil and James Cecil Manuscripts and Letters

A fine collection of six pieces by three generations of the British noble Salisbury family, comprising manuscript documents signed, manuscript letters signed, and autograph letters signed spanning the years 1609 ? 1803. The signers include Robert Cecil, William Cecil and James Cecil, all of whom were statesmen.

The archive offers two indentures signed by Robert Cecil, 1st Early of Salisbury (1563-1612): the first, 24? x 13.5? on vellum, is signed ?R. Salisbury? at bottom, dated July 7, 1609. Expected folds, somewhat weakened and with loss thereon, bears original paper seal at bottom, overall good.

The second indenture, a handsome scallop-top style, measures 24? x 11? vellum, date ca. 1609 as well, and also boldly signed at bottom. Light dampstaining to top margin, folds with splitting thereon, very good.

WITH: a manuscript letter signed of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury (1591-1668), 1 page, 7.5? x 11?, [n.p.], December 30, 1652, a receipt of a wages, boldly signed ?Salisbury? at conclusion. Light wear to margins with a bit of loss thereon, else very good.

Together with three items signed by James Cecil, 1st Marquess of Salisbury (1748-1832): an autograph letter signed ?Salisbury,? one page, 7.5? x 9.5?, [n.p.], January 13, 1799, to an unnamed gentleman acknowledging receipt of his letter and inviting him to meet. Light toning to edges, otherwise very good.

A manuscript letter signed 1 page, 8? x 11?, [n.p.], ?February 1800,? in which Salisbury as Lord Chamberlain of the Household approves a comic opera titled ?The Egyptian Festival,? on account that it does: ??not contain in it anything immoral, or otherwise improper for the Stage??. Toned areas brush signature at right margin but do not materially detract, otherwise very good.

This archive concludes with an autograph letter signed of the Marquess as Colonel of the Hertfordshire Militia, one page 7.25? x 9.33?, Hatfield, July 22, 1803, penned to King George III. In part: ??When I had the honor to pay to Your Royal Highness a few weeks ago at the Horseguards, Your Royal Highness was graciously pleas?d to assure that I was not to have the Eastern District. I have since heard that the Hertfordshire Regiment of Militia is one of those which is to form the Encampment at Coxheath. If without any Detriment to the Service Your Royal Highness could grant me the indulgence of remaining in the Eastern District, I cannot say how very convenient it would be??. Chipping at right margin otherwise very good.
