Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, ca. 3rd century BCE. An elegant core-formed Roman glass alabastron with blue and tawny almond colored trailing in a feathered pattern on the neck. This alabastron has the characteristic elongated form with a tapered conical body and pointed bottom, and twin small opposing lug handles applied at the shoulder. The earliest glass vessels were made via a technique known as core-forming in which molten glass was gathered around a core of clay (and at times animal dung) held in place by a metal rod. The desired form of the finished piece corresponded to the inner core which in turn supported the glass object as it hardened in a furnace. Following this, threads of glass of different colors were usually trailed over the vessel and form. Then the artisan used sharp tools to 'comb' patterns on the surface. After it cooled, the piece was further detailed, sometimes reheated, and polished. This technique was the standard for approximately 2,000 years. By the 1st century BCE, glass blowing which was far less time consuming replaced the core-forming technique. A beautiful example! Custom stand. Size: Vessel itself measures 4-3/4" x 1-1/2"W (12.1 x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Allan Stone collection, acquired in 1960s to 1980s.
