Description
A Baidarka kayak model, also known as an Aleutian kayak, Alaska c.1900. Triple kayak with bifurcated bow, fitted with three Russian explorers having carved and painted wood heads and cloth clothes. The kayak made of hand sewn and laced animal skin (possibly seal or sea lion) stretched on a wooden frame. Measures 37.5" long, 5.25" wide, 7" high to top of middle explorer. With three paddles and two spears, the spears originally used to measure the depths of the fjords / fiords for possible settlement of a harbor.
HISTORY NOTE: Baidarka; a Russian word meaning "small boat", refers to skin-on-frame kayaks of the kind made by the Aleut peoples for transport and hunting. The triple kayak form may have developed after European contact.
