A chartreuse and ivory silk damask false quilted petticoat, 1770s-80s, woven with leopard-spotted ribbon trails, delicately coiling tendrils and blooms

Petticoat was made from re-used, pieced together panels of silk at the rear seat and upper waist areas which would not have visible under an open robe. There is a later 4x7cm patched repair in matching silk to below front right waist area. The linen waist binding needs re-stitching at the right side in front of the pocket slit. There are two splits below the waistband in this area and several areas of fraying to the waist pleats along the front. Main front skirt panels are generally good. Slight soiling to hem. Back of petticoat – faint pink watermark concealed within pleats of left hip area. The narrow vertical centre back panel looks slightly darker than the rest and there are areas of thinning in the silk. This must have seen more action in its previous garment formation. There is a faint light brown stain above rear hem area. Inside – the false quilted wool lining is generally good. No alterations.
