Description
THE LYNCHING OF JOE KISER AND TOM JOHNSON
Photograph, 4" x 5 1/2" b/w, mounted on heavy card stock, showing the corpses of two lynched African-American men, purported to be Joe Kiser and Tom Johnson. A label on the verso, which has been mostly torn away, reads: "A Day of Tragedy - Emma Hartsell, a Thirteen-Year-Old-Girl, Brutally Assaulted Then Killed..." Kiser and Johnson were lynched in North Carolina in 1898, after being arrested for the murder of Emma Hartsell. The case spawned a folk song, which goes, in part: " As they stood on death's cold brink, Joe Kizzer begged the man for drink. 'No drink, no drink!' the man replied, 'To Hell, to Hell your soul must fly. ' And one thing more my song does lack: I forgot to say the men were black; Her friends and neighbors will say the same, And Emma Hartsell was her name." Includes the score and complete lyrics to the song. The photo is greatly faded and toned. Fair overall.
