Description
[Munster, Sebastian] TABULA NOVARUM INSULARUM, QUAS DIVERSIS RESPECTIBUS OCCIDENTALES & INDIANAS UOCANT. Double-page woodcut map of North and South America by Sebastian Munster. First cut in 1540, this map was the first to show North and South America as continents, as opposed to mere groups of islands, to show North and South America as connected and to show North America separated from Asia by water. The map’s labels are metal type inserted into the woodcut before printing. Burden’s State 9: The label “Paunco” appears in the gulf of Mexico, but the label “Temistitan” has been removed from Mexico. The phrase “Novus Orbis” does not appear on the map. “Sciana” does not appear below the Portuguese flag. “Die Neuw Welt” appears low in South America. The phrase “Nouus orbis” was added to South America. Below “Nouus orbis” is the label “oua Insula Atlantica quam uocant Brasilii & Americam.” Earliest appearance of State 9 known to Burden was in 1558 (German text on verso), and the earliest State 10 was in 1559 (Latin text on its verso). This is State 9 with Latin text on its verso. The Hudson Bay is shown larger than actual size, creating an isthmus. Northeastern portion of North America labeled “Francisca,” and the southwestern portion “Terra florida.” “Iucatans” (Yucatan) is an island. Schwartz & Ehrenberg, pl. 18. Burden 12 (state 9). Suarez 23. Later hand coloring. 10 7/8” x 14 3/8”. Verso's upper margin has 3 paper remnants from previous hinging. Gentle edgewear/tiny tears (mostly the lower edge), few faint marginal creases. Near fine.
