Description
South America, Brazil, ca. 18th century CE. A finely carved and painted wooden figurine depicting a bishop or a saint, possibly Saint Dominic, a Spanish priest and founder of the Dominican Order. Dominic is also known as the patron saint of astronomers. The figure wears a red-lined, dark brown mantle over white and black robes, all trimmed with gold hued paint, and stands upon a tiered base. His face is sensitively carved and detailed with inlaid eyes, possibly made of glass. A lovely antique statue honoring the patron saint. Size: 9.75" x 3" x 2.25" (24.8 x 7.6 x 5.7 cm)
