Description
An Etruscan pink clay footed bowl from the Genucilia group, c. mid-4th Century BC, H: 2 1/10 in (5.4cm), D: 5 2/3 in (14.5cm). This lathe molded bowl has a horizontal lip, decorated with a clockwise wave in red and black slip. Depicted in the rounded center of the bowl is the profile of a female face facing to the left. She is wearing a veil over her head and a large, round earring. The underside of the bowl also has a bit of black and red slip decoration above the foot. This kind of plate was popular in Etruria in the 4th Century BC, and they were exported throughout the Mediterranean. A plate of this type in the RISD Museum of Art, bears the signed name, P. Genucilia, which is where the group gets its name. Ex Collection of a well-known Italian private collector beginning in the late 1940's.
