Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942)

In 1890 Heinrich Vogeler began studying at the Academy in Dusseldorf. After several study trips and a first stay in Worpswede interrupted his studies, he graduated in 1895 and settled in the Barkenhoff in Worpswede. Here he co-founded the Worpswede artist association. Soon first exhibitions followed and Vogeler traveled to England and Italy. In addition to furniture he designed jewelry, porcelain for the porcelain manufactory Meissen and silver work for M.H. Wilkens in Bremen. During World War I he served as an intelligence officer on the Eastern Front. In the 1920s Vogeler regularly traveled to Russia. Together with George Grosz and John Heartfield he was a founding member of the ‘Assoziation revolutionärer bildender Künstler Deutschlands’ in 1928. His work of the 1930s exhibits anti-fascist tendencies. Today Heinrich Vogeler is considered one of the most important graphic artists and illustrators of German Art Nouveau. (fea)
