T., 21-1/4 in. light scratches, minor wear. Notes: James Dunwoody Bulloch, Born 1823, Savannah, Georgia was, during the America civil war, the Confederacy’s chief foreign agent in Great Britain. Based in Liverpool, he operated blockade runners and raiders that provided the Confederacy with its only source of hard currency in exchange for cotton. Excluded from the general amnesty following the Civil War because he was a secret agent on foreign soil, risking charges for treason, Bulloch spent the remainder of his life in England where he died in 1901.

Earlier in his naval career, James D. Bulloch, Captain of the 225-foot-long wooden hulled full-rigged sailing ship equipped with steam engines that dove two paddle wheels, the cargo ship [Black Warrior] was bound from Alabama to New York, carrying cargo and passengers. Stopping at Cuba, on February 28, 1854, the Spanish officials looked into the hold and found Alabama cotton they considered undeclared cargo. [Black Warrior] was seized by Spanish authorities at Havana, Captain Bulloch was arrested and the passengers were forced to leave the ship. Crew and passengers were later allowed to board an American steamer, [Fulton] after the owners of the [Black Warrior] paid a $6,000 fine.


Captain Bulloch was the half-brother of Martha Roosevelt, mother of President Theodore Roosevelt. Bulloch was the uncle of President Roosevelt.. Provenance: Private Collection
