Skeneatless NY Brass Baggage Tag pre 1870

Item Details

Description

A nice early brass baggage tag that dates to the period 1853 to 1869. The New York Central became the New York Central & Hudson River in 1969. There are several nice qualities to this tag:

(1) it is a simple square slightly turned
(2). The strap opening is not centered or square
(3) the NYC RR stamping is on the reverse, later tags have everything on one side
(4) Skeneateles is not spelled correctly

It is number 855 and it measures about 1 3/4" across on the square sides. What a story this tag could tell! Skeneateles sits on top of one of the Finger Lakes in New York and the lake has the same name. If you Google "Skeneatless" you will get hits going back to the 1830s. A great piece of history.
