Item Details

Description

Papua New Guinea, Sepik River, ca. 1940 CE. A masterful figural group carved from wood and adorned with earth pigments, depicting a smiling male figure, sitting on a stool, with his elbows resting upon the front of the stool which is comprised of wondrous bird forms with long, pointed beaks and incised eyes and markings. This piece more than likely depicts the man engaged in a ceremony associated with initiation rites.

Provenance: Estate of Peter Arnovick, Los Altos, CA. Mr. Arnovick was an avid collector and dealer of ancient and ethnographic arts from around the world.

Size: 8" W x 18" H (20.3 cm x 45.7 cm)
