This cabinet with original patina was once a merchant's counter. Some of the original lacquer has worn off, leaving it with a nice old antique finish. Part of its charm is the secret storage compartment built on the inside. There is a drawer and storage behind two little doors which can be secured with a lock. This area can also be reached from the outside. More hidden storage is found underneath the lower drawer. The cabinet is built in the traditional method of panel construction with rounded members. It is put together with joinery and without nails. The hardware appears to be of the period. The wood is southern elm and it came from Zhejiang Province in Southeast China. The dating is mid 19 century. 37.5 inches wide, 22,5 inches deep and 34 inches high, (It is a known fact that the secret compartment of a Chinese cabinet is found under the bottom shelf. Everyone knows that. But unlike fine European cabinets that have built in secret places, it is rare to fine a piece that has a "safe" built in but is still partly accessible from the outside.)
