This rare, original Grateful Dead concert poster was produced for a benefit show for the Hells Angels at the Anderson Theater in New York City, November 23, 1970. The event was built from Jerry Garcia’s friendship with Sandy Alexander, head of the New York Chapter of Hells Angels. The illustration on this poster includes an iconic skeleton on a motorcycle and a “Hells Angels New York City” chapter logo. This poster was produced in small number for a limited distribution in the New York City area. Rumors purport that a brief fight broke out between the Hells Angels and a rival motorcycle gang before the concert started, but the fight failed to delay the music.
At the time of this concert, Grateful Dead band members included front man and guitarist Jerry Garcia, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, bass guitarist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan and guitarist Bob Weir. Based out of San Francisco, the Grateful Dead had a long, illustrious career as the most prominent band during the psychedelic era, starting in 1965 and dissolving in 1995 after Garcia’s death. Their massive network of fans, aptly named ‘Deadheads’, would devotedly follow the band while on tour, dancing to the music. This colorful poster would be a classic addition to any Deadhead’s collection.
The poster is in good condition with minor toning to paper. The frame measures 36 ¼ x 24 ¼ x 1 ½ in., the poster measures 35 x 23 in.
