The third edition of Burr's three-year project to present "an accurate and complete geographical view of a State reputed the richest and best cultivated in the Union", sponsored by the New York Legislature and executed under the auspices of the State Surveyor General Simeon DeWitt. This edition has been enhanced by the inclusion of the new Post Offices, villages, lighthouses Provenance: The contemporary inscription is from James Cannings and Lydia Fuller, Skaneateles, gifting the book to Quaker reformer and anti-slavery campaigner Joseph John Gurney, presumably as a result of his visit to America between 1837 & 1840 (see A Journey in North America, described in familiar letters to Amelia Opie , 1841; see also A Letter from James Cannings Fuller, of Skaneateles, State of New York, to Joseph John Gurney: Being Some Animadversions Upon J.J.
