Description
Ptolemaic Period, 332-30 BC. A restrung panel of small glazed composition beads in various colours representing a mummy face mask with looped border. Ex Mariaud de Serres, Paris, France; 1980s-1990s. Beaded masks were laid over the face over the mummy wrappings of the deceased. The green beads on the mask may be linked with Osiris, god of the underworld, who is depicted with a green skin in tomb paintings. This follows a traditional belief that deities could be invoked to assure an easy transition to the afterlife. Osiris was the son of Nut, the sky goddess, and Geb the earth god, and first appeared in the fifth dynasty. 31.54 grams, 13.6cm (5 1/4").
