Description
4th century AD. A late Roman bronze belt plaque with ribbed channel to the long edge, ropework lateral edges, pentagonal plaque with scooped upper edges filled with running scrolls; openwork border with mask of Oceanus between opposed hippocampi each with one raised foreleg, open mouth; pierced in three places for attachment. Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1995. Cf. similar example from Orsova in Bishop, M.C. & Coulston, J.C.N. Roman Military Equipment From the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome, London, 1993, fig.139(5). 69 grams, 92mm (3 3/4").
