Description
Description: Bar and two stools, designed by Paul Tuttle in the 1950's. The bar and stools are on sculptural hairpin shaped legs. The bar has a boomerang top over a rounded base, with two shelves to one side. There is a cabinet in the front and a recessed area in the top for bottles. The bar is lacquered in black and wrapped with white faux leather, while the stools are upholstered in white.
History: In the annals of Los Angeles mid-century modernism, Paul Tuttle may not loom nearly as large as Charles Eames and Pierre Koenig, but he should. That said, he achieved international recognition as a designer best known for his modern, elegant furniture. Tuttle's body of work included custom and manufactured furniture, as well as architectural and interior projects in Santa Barbara, his home since 1956. Educated at the Chouinard Art Institute in Southern California, he studied architecture at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West in Arizona. He worked for Architects Thornton Ladd and Welton Becket, designer of Hollywood landmarks such as the Capitol Records building and the Cinerama Dome. In the 1960s, Tuttle designed houses in the Santa Barbara area but earned his greatest acclaim for furniture designs in sculpted wood and geometric stainless steel.
