Description
Description: Four hand painted two light chandelier wall sconces. Victorian style with gilded brass arms and fancy trim in acanthus branch shape. Each candle holder is hand painted porcelain with gold, blue and pink. The wall base is clamshell shaped with hand painted flowers on a white background with maroon and gold trim. The candle tapers have the appearance of candle wax drippings.
History: Long ago, sconces were primarily mobile lighting devices which were carried to light the way throughout a home or passageway. These were frequently hung on a wall or over a fireplace where they were readily available for a person's use. Today, they are attached to a wall to provide permanent illumination. The words “wall lamps†and “sconces†are sometimes used interchangeably to describe lighting that is attached to a wall. Strictly speaking, though, the “lamp†is the thing that provides the illumination while the “sconce†is the piece that physically attaches to the wall.
