Description
Description: Pair of covered urns in the Armorial Pattern, by Edme Samson, c.1860. Done in the Asian motif, the urns are hand decorated with both paint and slip. Each lid is topped with a gilded dog as a finial.

History: Edmé Samson, founded the ceramics firm Samson, Edmé et Cie (commonly known as Samson Ceramics) in 1845. Well known as a copyist, the firm either drew inspiration from other factories, directly copied their pieces, or reproduced pieces on display in museums. Samson never set out to produce copies with the intention to deceive, and claimed that all reproductions the firm produced would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals.
