DESCRIPTION: Bayaka carved wooden ceremonial mask of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Oval-shaped head with projecting ears, and beard, bulging eyes, and narrow neck. Traces of pigment in crease. 19th/20th century. PROVENANCE: From the Saul and Florence Putterman Collection, Sarasota, Florida. Purchased from the Segy Gallery in 1970. Copy of Segy Gallery certificate #535 included. Saul Putterman is an entrepreneur and founder of apparel and fashion manufacturing enterprises in New York, Florida, and Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. Florence Putterman is a highly regarded artist who received her BS degree at New York University and her Masters of Fine Arts Degree at Penn State University. Originally from New York City, The Puttermans have made their home for over 50 years in Selinsgrove, PA, and winter in Sarasota, Florida. They are active humanitarians and philanthropists who collected fine modern and contemporary art and tribal art during their lives. MEASUREMENTS: 14" x 7". CONDITION: Loss of pigment. Minor abrasions and scratches. Burn mark under lower lip. Possibly missing superstructure.
