Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, ca. 6th to 4th century BCE. An ancient Greek torque bracelet - torque meaning that it is open ended in the front - with decorative ram head terminals on either side of the opening and an overall attractive sinous form. While some scholars believe torque jewelry was a sign of elite status or nobility, others have presented the theory that such jewelry was awarded to warriors as rewards for their participation in battle. A beautiful ancient bracelet of an ancient Greek double-headed ram design. Size: 9" L with interior that measures 2.75" W x 1.75" H (22.9 cm x 7 cm x 4.4 cm)

The oldest torque jewelery examples were in fact excavated in classical Greek burial tombs. Celtic torques are also usually discovered in tombs.

Provenance: Ex - private New Jersey collection formed between 1960 and 1985
