The Collection of Anthony Nelson: Anthony Nelson’s father was an American diplomat who moved his family between posts in Washington, DC and Europe. While in Europe, the family traveled extensively and spent a lot of time in museums and antique shops. Nelson's parents were particularly fond of early Biedermeier furniture, which shares the clean lines and functionality of much mid-century modern furniture.During graduate school, Nelson often visited a friend who was studying architecture at IIT. He credits this exposure with sparking his interest in Bauhaus design. After graduate school, he bought his first piece of mid-century modern at an antique mall in Virginia: a Harry Bertoia Diamond chair that he still owns.As an adult, Nelson has lived and worked throughout Europe and the US. In 2015, he and his German-born wife and their daughter returned to Europe after a five-year stint of living and working in the United States. During their time in the US,they added quite a few pieces of American mid-century modern furniture to their collection. They have chosen to sell these pieces of Scandinavian design to make room for the new acquisitions."I’m a big fan of the Bauhaus. However, I found that the industrial materials of the Bauhaus were too cold and hard for me to live with every day. Scandinavian mid-century design combines the precision and functionality of the Bauhaus with warmer, more organic materials like rosewood, teak, and leather. I need the warmth of the Scandinavian furniture to balance my analytic personality. I travel a lot for work and I wanted a home that would let me relax and unwind from the road. Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture provides the clean design aesthetic I was looking for with the warmth and comfort I need to relax. We now live with a combination of Biedermeier, Scandinavian, and American mid-century modern, which works well for us." -Anthony Nelson, Munich, Germany, January 2016
