AN ANTIQUE CARVED WOOD CAROUSEL HORSE, POSSIBLY AMERICAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY, modeled in a galloping position and rearing, slightly turned head with lovely flowing mane and halter buckled strap details, before low laying ears and bulging eyes, the open mouth revealing teeth and tongue, the body centering floral incised saddle and blanket carving, raised on naturalistic sectioned legs and hooves. Height: 27" Width: 58" Depth: 9" NOTE: This horse is one of the more naturalistic ones than is generally found in the carousel genre, exhibiting more than a rudimentary knowledge of horse anatomy, the carver possibly a foreign immigrant, maybe of Italian origin.

Traces of white gesso, red, and green paint in crevices throughout, water marks, surface marks and scratches, discoloration, age cracks, old repairs, some wood filled spots, back left ankle/hoof section and the tail are later, pierced for carousel mounting.
