A PRE-COLUMBIAN CERAMIC VESSEL, CHANCAY, PERU, 1000 A.D.- 1500 A.D., the hollow strap handled figure seated upon thin bent legs, with skeletal like arms holding a cup or wind type instrument. The lips are slightly parted, with a pointed nose, dark rimmed almond shaped eyes with tear lines, and downward pointed eyebrows setting the face in a stern look. Wearing a geometric patterned headdress and with a standing parrot on each shoulder, the entire piece is painted in cream and black. Height: 8 1/4" NOTE: The Chancay people of the central Peruvian area where known more for their textile work then ceramics. In general, the ceramic work was quite bland compared to other Pre Columbian civilizations of the time. The almost crude appearance of their vessels and dolls is what later became their staple, making it almost impossible to not recognize it.

Two chips along the rim have been repaired. Paint is still fairly well intact. Some repainting. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
