AN INDONESIAN TRIBAL PAINTED AND CARVED WOOD SHIELD, ASMAT PEOPLES, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, THIRD QUARTER 20TH CENTURY, of tapering rectangular flat form and centering stylized scrolling details in relief, highlighted in earthen red and white pigments, surmounted by a male figure with wrists and ankles suspending raffia cords. Height: 51" Provenance: This Asmat shield was purchased by the Seldens during a 1973 trip to Indonesia and region.
