Incredible Roman Bronze Handle - Feline Head

Item Details

Description

Rome, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. This is a cast bronze fulcrum attachment in the shape of a feline head with intricate facial and fur details. Fulcrum attachments were placed on the fulcrums, or curved headboards, of the reclining couches that wealthy Greeks and Romans sat on during banquets during this time period. It is rare to find Roman depictions of felines as cats were not common household pets -- weasels and snakes were kept in Roman households instead to deal with pests. One of the only depictions of a cat known from Roman culture is a mosaic in the House of the Faun in Pompeii showing a tabby leaping on a bird -- but many people have interpreted this to be a work of art mourning a pet bird rather than one feteing a cat. However, cats were hugely important to Egyptian culture, so this piece might reflect an Egyptian influence on the person who commissioned it. Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.75" L x 4.75" W x 4.75" H (7 cm x 12.1 cm x 12.1 cm).
