DE GAULLE CHARLES: (1890-1970) French General of World War II. Later President of the French Republic 1959-69. Wartime T.L.S., C. de Gaulle, one page, 4to, Carlton Gardens, London, 16th August 1940, to Madame Jeanne Fyfe-Poulain, in French. De Gaulle states that the sentiments expressed in his correspondent's letter 'are a valuable encouragement to me' and continues to thank her for her offer of services, remarking 'To allow me to make use of your assistance, I should be obliged if you would return the attached questionnaire to my private office'. Accompanied by two related documents, in French, and a contemporary English translation of a letter, one being a notice of appointment to Fyfe-Poulain, stating that she is to be engaged in the civil personnel of the French National Committee in London as an accounts assistant from 8th November 1943 at a salary of 22 per month, another stating that according to a decision made on the 8th October 1945 her salary as an accounts secretary has been fixed at 30, and in the letter issued by the Chief of the Delegation of the French Supply Council Fyfe-Poulain is served her notice, effective from 1st October 1948, explaining that, as a result 'of the Staff reductions we have had to enforce further to the Budget cuts voted by Parliament'.
