Description
Galli, Alfredo (Italian-American, Early 20th Century) Oil Painting. “Boy with Grape Basket.” Oil on board. Signed lower right A. Galli 1915. In good condition. Measures 10 ” x 6 ”. Frame measures 12 ” x 8 ”.
From Askart: Mr. Galli was born in Florence, Italy, date unknown, and entered the Florence Academy of Art at the age of twelve. He painted members of the nobility of Europe, among them the Princess of Pless and members of her family. In her "Memoirs" she mentions Galli. In 1929 he came to New Orleans to stay after two previous visits had convinced him that the city was a "delightful place", particularly suited to an artist. It seems to have been true. He painted my mother in 1929, in his studio at 711 Bourbon Street, and many of her social friends. Not only did he paint most of these ladies, but went on to paint their friends also. He delighted in painting children, as he painted me when I was two years old, sitting gracefully on the grass in my little girl's slip, barefooted and holding a rose, with roses and petals surrounding me. Again, he went on to paint my cousins and friends in this same manner. Over the years, "Mr. Galli" was a household name in New Orleans. He was greatly respected by men and women alike, and as having been a participant to many a conversation about him, the ladies thought he was "absolutely gorgeous!” He was very popular and prolific in New Orleans during his time here. Galli had painted portraits of numbers of well known Americans, including Edward Hamblin Everette, the billionaire from Bennington, Vermont, after which Everette Field in New York was named, as he donated the land to the city.
