Gross, Earl Clifford (American, 1899-1993) Oil Painting. “Midj on Michigan Ave.” Dated ‘68. Oil on artist board. The Chicago painting is signed lower right Earl Gross. In good condition. Measures 16” x 12”. Frame measures 20” x 16”.
From AskArt: Gross was born on September 11, 1899 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and studied at Westminster College and Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon University.) He moved to Chicago in 1919 and resided there almost 60 years. He exhibited at the Macbeth Galleries in 1941 and in 1946 had an exhibition in New York at AAA. He taught at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and later in Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Atlanta. He later lived in Evanston and Glencoe, Illinois. His art has been displayed in the Pentagon and at the Air Force Academy as well as in the Art Institute and many museums around the country. He helped establish the commercial art studio of Stevens, Gross, Sundblom & Staltz, later known as Stevens-Gross Inc., Chicago. He was a combat artist for the U.S. Air Force in the Far East. He has been Professor of Painting at the Longboat Key Art Center in Florida; Professor of Painting at the New Orleans Academy of Art and the Highland Park Art Center in Chicago. From 1926 to 1962, he was President of Stevens-Gross Studios in Chicago.
